The stress of 2 finals today (and none tomorrow, thankfully) has created this. While I watched "The World According to Garp" and ate dinner, I had a lot of fun painting this. It's my interpretation of things.

It's kind of like This Guy and This Guy had a face-painting party. And morphed.

English Patience

The English Patient. I just bought it on VHS (yes, I know) tonight and it was $2.50 which although was not as cheap as I would've liked (come on, Goodwill, VHS tapes should be majorly cheap but you are still hanging around the $2 mark), I bought it with great intentions. I bought a VHS player during the Summer because I figure that I will not be able to afford the DVD versions of these masterpieces for a long time in the future. A friend has decided to give me bit of his VHS collection and now I own Patton and Wallace & Gromit (classic). I also bought the book Tess of the D'Urbervilles which is a good Thomas Hardy classic novel.

I'm excited to have it because I know that as Finals approach (ah, yes, another semi-splendid semester is over), I will want to watch something I don't have to pay attn to but will still want to have as background noise/something of interest. And who can say no to such marvelous actors and actresses such as Ralph Fiennes, Juliette Binoche, Colin Firth and the fantastic Kristin Scott Thomas? KST of I've Loved You So Long fame and Ralph Fiennes who would prefer to have Oscar and Lucinda wiped off his resume.

When this movie, The English Patient, came out in 1996 in November, I was eight years old and had just moved to the United States about 3 months before. I do recall hearing about the movie though and for many years after that, I just assumed it was something that I was never going to see because it wouldn't live up to my expectations. Little did I know that I would love it the first time I saw it.

Now if I could just get My Brilliant Career on VHS (or DVD) that would be top notch because the book was exceptional and Sam Neill as a young man cuts a striking hero.

I had this idea for a painting since the summer and although this is not what I intended the result to look like, I still like it. My mother and I went to the local theatre player's club which showed "Doubt" and it was funny because there was this couple of elderly ladies who were so just out there, such an odd couple. This is not them, by any means but whatev, you know?

I may reuse this idea in the future and hopefully come up with something completely different and outrageous. I'm searching for a quality of "holy cow" instead of "cool" so that will probably take a while to figure out. I also played with the idea of adding some components in a sort of collage effort but rejected it in this particular painting. However, that is an option that I will keep open.

Mod Podge is my new best friend and I have pictures of a table done with it in the near future appearing on here.

This is just something I drew whilst busy listening to intense professors lecture about break-even points and what exactly a fixed cost is. This is surely stuff that everyone should have to learn.

Basically right now, I am hunkered down in the immense battle called schoolwork where grenades are thrown and quizzes are dodged. This means I haven't done anything super exciting in a while and considering that no one really reads this blog, I am unsurprised that no one has commented in a long time. However, that doesn't mean I will stop blogging. It just means that soon there will be something worth reading. I promise. Or else I will just dump a whole lot of photos on here and call it a day. Whichever I prefer at that given time.

In the meantime, I plan on entering the Vitamin Water bottle challenge and the Positive Posters competition. I am trying to make some money so that I can go visit my family in Australia. I promise, if you give me enough money to go to Australia, I will have far more interesting things to blog about!

Dia de los Muertos papier mache project

This book, The Big-Ass Book of Crafts, is spectacular.

For the Day of the Dead (Dia de los Muertos), I am making a shrine in the bay window of the house I am living in. Today some friends and I ventured to Goodwill to find some things to put on our skulls. Well, what we did was take a base of Arizona ice tea plastic bottle things (and for me, an empty wine bottle) and papier mache that, then add a balloon for the head. I got a bunch of kitchy/cool things to add to my project. We painted them with acrylic paint and then hot-glue-gunned the stuff on.

The one that has the suit is by my friend Lauren.

Review of Songbird

Long ago, I decided that iTunes was not the way to do music. Sure, it's dumbed down enough that everybody can use it but it limits people too much. I have also tried Winamp Pro but that got old really, really fast. For some reason, there are a lot of bugs even though it is like an official way to listen to music. Maybe not official but legitimate.

With these things in mind, I thought I would retry Songbird again recently. It's pretty neat, has a classy feel with different options for skins and what you really want to do which is listen to music. I hardly ever watched videos using Winamp and if I ever need to go down that road, that's what that usually useless Windows Media Player is good for.

What really sells me on Songbird are some of the add ons. There's an option for a "Smarty Pants" playlist which scans one particular song that you have playing and then goes through some database and sees what fits that song next best and goes through your library, creating a playlist based on that one song. It's a cool way to have a genre-like feel when most of the time my genre names are messed up because of the fact that a lot of my music comes from music blogs.

Another awesome feature that I take full advantage of is that Songbird has a web browser in it. While I still am doggedly devoted to Google Chrome, when you search for a song in either The Hype Machine or Skreemr (my personal choices), Songbird scans the page for .mp3's and you can download the songs into your library but even more than that, you can preview them before you download them. There's always new music out there and The Hype Machine keeps up-to-date with that. Or for instance, a music site that offers free music like www.bardomusic.com? Songbird would have a field day with that!

Sure, there are bugs in Songbird too but I guess they're just not the ones that bothered the hell out of me with Winamp. So I say, download Songbird and give it a shot. If you're into indie music and don't listen to the radio anymore, why would you even bother with the other crap there is out there?

Table fixation

My friend Carly gave me this awesome book for my birthday, The Big-Ass Book of Crafts. In the book, there are some cool ways to alter tables to make them more aesthetically pleasing. Last weekend, I took this table that my friend Jeff gave me and decided to give it a makeover.

Tessa, Lauren and I went to Michael's, the craft store, and got some spray paint and some

decoupage glue stuff. The spray painting was semi-successful in that I definitely did not buy enough spray paint.

So then began the task of painting it.

When that was done, it was time to add the images. I took some from Rolling Stone and Nylon just for fun. In the book, it told me to use Minwax and polyurethane coats to protect the table but instead, I used the decoupage...mostly because the lady at Michael's who I conferred with said that it would work fine that way.

The final result which you can click to enlarge. Thanks to Lauren and Tessa who helped out a lot!

Polandski

So as we all know, Polanski was finally apprehended for his 1978 "rape" of that 13 year old who has petty much taken back what she said about the encounter. I watched a documentary about Roman Polanski during the summer just because I needed clarification about this pretty crazy thing that happened after his wife infamously died at the hands of the insane Charles Manson-ites. Polanski really was playing with fire when this whole shit-storm erupted and the whole courtroom/corrupted judge problem made it easier for Polanski to flee, I think. Switzerland, I think I will not visit you if I ever am evading US law.

Poland, I thought we believed in human rights? Castrating pedophiles is a little horrific and more than that probably considerably devastating to the man that it happens to. I guess there aren't many female pedophiles in Poland?

Now let me connect this Polandski idea. If Polanski had committed his offense in Poland, fleed, brought back to Poland now, and he was tried and convicted (I have no idea how Poland judges things and/or how they proceed judicially), he would be castrated. How is it that genius usually accompanies bad choices?

So, to spice up your life a little bit, why not download some music from around the globe? Not just random tunes but ones that have a little bit of description that will help you decide if it's your thing or not, written by people who run music blogs.

Try out The Pop Cop's or Swedesplease to decide. This Music Alliance thing happens every month and there are usually a few gems in there that will make your friends think you are cooler than a penguin taking a swim in the shark infested waters of wherever that kind of thing happens.

I am currently computer-less and therefore lost in time, lost in space, and meaning*.

I am trying my hardest to stay sane and not break down and do statistics homework but do not fear, I shall not waver in my opposition to the homework. I am still kind of working on Maleficent the drawing and hope to even have completed a painting at some point. I just hope that I will find some sort of equilibrium at some point because I feel as though my life right now is in extremes.

So, to apologize for my lack of blogging, I thought I would add some awesome pictures of my friend Jeff and his new haircut and plead with you all to increase his "tumblarity" (I don't know the correct spelling of that made up term) so that he can triumph over all of the other tumblr'ers.

Tomorrow will be a busy day, I better put on my lucky socks. You should too.

Just a doodle I started today and finished tonight. Maleficent to come soon as another female Disney villain although she would've been done today if the school computers hadn't been so slow that I probably could have run a mile in the time that it actually loaded a google images page. And that's saying something! lol
